This is one of the most overlooked things we come across here at BHS. We ask a customer how long it has been since they have sealed their tile & grout and we get blank stares back. This is an extremely important preventative measure for your grout.
Lets cover some basics. Grout is the hardened mixture that is between your tiles on your tile and grout surface. This mixture, when hardened, is pourous. Germs, mold, mildew, and bacteria can find safe harbor in unsealed grout. This can cause an obvious health hazard and the grout will also be irrevocably stained after some time and will need to be completely replaced. As you can imagine, this will be expensive.
At BHS, we like to say that there are two categories of tile and grout in your home. The first category is your high traffic areas. This could be: bathroom, wash room, or kitchen floors. These surfaces need to be sealed once a year!
The second category is basically all the other tile and grout in your home. This could be: countertops, back splashes, lightly used surfaces. These surfaces see little wear and it is important to seal them once every 4-5 years.
